Since the early 1900s, the American Chestnut tree species has been plagued by the Chestnut blight. In the Lehigh Valley, none can be found naturally but thousands have been planted by conservationists to bring back the towering trees. The saplings began growing in April, housed in milk cartons before being transferred into the ground near the park's community garden. The planting process is very intentional: the saplings are guarded with wraparound fences to keep voles and chipmunks at bay and covered with landscape fabric to ward off weeds. When he lit his memorial candle, he reflected on joining the two in death, perhaps soon.
